This piece brings together the classic Mati form, inspired by the shape of a horse’s hoof, and the steadfast beauty of plum blossoms flourishing in winter.
A master artisan of Huashan Zhuoyin paints the finely crafted porcelain gaiwan with pure cobalt-blue pigment. Ancient plum branches twist across the bowl and continue seamlessly onto the lid, their iron-like strength expressed through richly layered shades of blue. Along the branches, delicate blossoms appear in varying stages—from tightly closed buds to flowers in full bloom.
As hot water fills the gaiwan and fragrant steam rises from beneath the lid, each opening and closing reveals a scholar’s ink-wash scroll: plum blossoms standing proudly amid winter snow, welcoming spring, good fortune, and new success.
